Bethel Park High School Chapter of Journalism Honorary Welcomes 25 Students to Quill & Scroll Membership

Bethel Park High School inducted 25 students into its Chapter of Quill & Scroll, the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, during a ceremony held at the school.

Students receiving honors of Quill & Scroll membership were Beacon yearbook staffers Elizabeth Corrins (Grade 10), Elizabeth Mackey (11), and Tacey Trypus (11).

The inductees from Black Hawk TV and media production were Ryder Barger (10), Shawn Mooney (11), Nico Rich (11), John Steffes (10) and Hayley Wuenschell (11).

Writers inducted for their work on Hawk Eye, the school’s online newspaper, included Zane Antonich (12), Kamiya Martin (11), Alyvia Sohyda (11), and Alea Taylor (12).

The Vernissage Literary Magazine contributors welcomed into the Quill & Scroll society were Kyleigh Baux (10), Emerson Crawford (12), Sam Highfield (12), Joanna Little (10), Natalie Mariutto, (11), Alaina McKain (10), Meredith Myers (11), Cadence Miller (9), Emily O’Connell (10), Makayla O’Neill (10), Elise Perez (12), Isabella Rusiski (12) and Ashlyn Schmidt (10).

“It’s always a wonderful experience for students who have worked diligently on school publications media to be recognized for their work,” noted Mr. John Allemang, coordinator of the school’s Quill & Scroll Chapter.

As part of the ceremony, journalism advisers Allemang, Mr. Brad Ksaszowski, and Ms. Kristen Kincak offered their congratulatory remarks to student staff members of the high school's newspaper (Hawk Eye), yearbook (Beacon), video production studio (BHTV), and literary arts magazine (Vernissage), who have excelled in communications work during the past school year.

The BPHS Chapter of Quill & Scroll was established in 1947. The local group builds upon the history of the international society, founded on April 10, 1926. It was then that a group of high school advisers organized the honorary to encourage and reward individual achievements in journalism and allied fields.

Since its organization, Quill & Scroll has granted charters in more than 14,600 high schools nationwide and worldwide.

Following the publication advisers’ remarks, inductees participated in ceremonial candle lighting and recited descriptions of the eight principles of effective journalism. The initiates received membership pins, certificates, and a Quill & Scroll online magazine subscription.

According to Quill & Scroll's by-laws, members must be chosen from students enrolled in high school, Grades 9-12, who, at the time of their election, meet the following requirements: They must be a senior, junior or second semester sophomore, be in the upper third of their class in general scholastic standing, have done superior work in some phase of school publications, and be recommended by their publication adviser.
