NAMS Students Speak with Famous Author

Team Impact members at Neil Armstrong Middle School had the opportunity to meet virtually with Todd Strasser, the author of the young adult book, “The Wave.”

“The Wave” was published in 1980 and is based on a true incident that occurred in a high school history class in Palo Alto, California, in 1969. The powerful forces of group pressure that pervaded many historic movements such as Nazism are recreated in the classroom when history teacher Burt Ross introduces a “new” system to his students.

The book was based on an essay by teacher Ron Jones, who called it, “The Third Wave,” which is a surfing reference.

The students asked the easy-going Strasser some questions about the book, some of his favorite other titles, and the writing process itself. Strasser patiently described his career and his process and excitedly talked to the students about their interests and aspirations.
